With 2500km underfoot and approximately 700km left of their mammoth southern African coastline run, Cipla Spar Miles for Smiles Coastal Challenge runners David Grier and Braam Malherbe now face one of their greatest challenges – to reach their goal of raising R1 000 for every kilometre of the South African coastline they are running.

Marc Lubner, co-founder and chairman of the Smile Foundation, said he got a call from Mandela saying “there is a 13-year-old who needs help”.

“But we soon realised that many more thousands of children need help.”

And this was how the foundation was born.
