hi my name is jannelle my son's name is ethan he has pierre robin syndrom and he will be 2 in feb. Ethan had a device called a feeding obturator made when he was about 10 days old we were told that it was to help him to be able to eat and that there was no possible way of him choking on it. well low and behold ethan spend 2 and half months in the hospital because of doctors ignorance ( but that a whole nother topic) so anyways after we were released we went for a trip to my parents which is about 12 hours away to have ethan baptised and the day of him baptism about an hour after he chocked on it i was on my way home from a quick trip to walmart he was with him dad at my mom's when i got the phone call something was wrong with ethan i didn't think it was as serious as it was and told him to wait 2 mins till i got thier and i would take care of it well i got there saw my baby and ran out the door with him in my arms we got to the hospital ethan was turning blue at this point we had every ped in the hospital in ethan's room trying to figure out if he had swallowed the obturator or what we knew something was wrong but all the x-rays showed NOTHING his sats were really low he was on oxygen and in total stress all he wanted to was scream finally me and his dad saw one thing on the x-ray that looked like it might be it and after a few more x-rays it was. he spent one night in the hospital. we had a new one made but never used it and he ate without it perfectly fine. we were told it was to help him eat and later discovered it was for the doctors benifit to make the surgery easrier. since then we have switched teams (couldn't trust them) and ethan is doing great now
i want to warn other parents OF THE DANGER it is not something that has to be used to make thier repair or life easier so why take such a risk we were told it was impossible to swallow or choke on and leter found out that it has happened alot. It was the scariest day of my life holding my son in my arms wanting to give him cpr but to afraid turning him onto his back would cause him to choke more. It it something i never want to see or hear another parent have to go through for the simple fact that it does nothing for them. sorry this is so long i start telling the story and can't seem to stop if anyone is using it please think twice please feel free to ask questions
My God
that sounds like a nightmare. Luckily we're not faced with having to use an obturator but thanks for the insight in any case. So glad Ethan's ok now.
All the best
